Laminate Flooring – Modern and Versatile Flooring Technology
Up until recent years laminate was thought of as a product that only served the purpose of protecting our kitchen bench tops. The laminate industry has seen an explosion in manufacturing and public demand thanks to the successful introduction of laminate into the flooring market.
Laminate flooring consists of high-density HDF (fiberboard), backed with plywood. Usually there is a slim layer of melamine underneath the fiberboard providing a moisture barrier. Imitation pictures and images of various flooring including hardwood, ceramic tiles, slate, natural stones and other imitation hard flooring surfaces are produced on sheets of paper then bonded to the HDF and coated with an invisible layer of aluminum oxide hence shielding and protecting the images and backing. This is also called the wear layer protecting against impact and dampness.
The majority of flooring products are graded by local industry bodies according to low and high quality ratings. The various grades will permit certain usage according to the specified traffic requirements for a particular environment. The laminate grading industry is referred to as an AC rating and is an industry-wide rating system of rules applicable to the various types of tests the laminate is subject to prior to being released onto the open market.
Ratings are established to determine the level of sustainability various qualities can withstand in relation to staining, burns, water immersion, swelling up and scratching. If it is deemed that a product passes or exceeds such tests it will be recognized with an AC rating.
The largest manufactures in laminate flooring are based in Europe and China. Every manufacturer has a unique method of constructing laminate flooring. Depending on where the flooring is to be installed will determine what appropriate AC rating should apply. An example is that you will not require the inner moisture core if your intention is to lay the laminate in dry areas such as a bedroom.
Laminate flooring is a floating floor product ideal for the DIY handy person and it usually requires little or no floor preparation. Any hard sub floor that is in good condition is ideal to lay over the top of. And apart from the reduced labor needed to complete the installation, a typical floating floor laminate project can cost less than half the price compared to any other hard flooring alternative – and it looks great too!
If you are considering buying laminate flooring without an AC rating you are more than likely buying a low quality product that has not been subjected to industry standard testing. If you are looking for an inexpensive flooring alternative that will both withstand heavy foot traffic and is also very easy on the eye, we doubt you will be restricted with the huge options to be found at your local flooring centre.
